Boys’ School Prefect Team Commissioned

January 01, 2018 at 2:20 PM

Yesterday, on the very first day of the new school year, the 2018 Boys’ School prefects were commissioned at a special service attended by their parents and invited guests. For the parents of the newly elected Head Boy, Austin McKegg, and Deputy Head Boy, Benjamin Hardie, this was a particularly proud day. These fine, young men both have the capability to serve and lead the School with distinction.

Principal, Mr Peter Cassie welcomed Head of Saint Kentigern, Mr David Hodge and Senior College Principal, Mrs Suzanne Winthrop who introduced this year’s College Head Boy, George Shirtcliffe. George spoke to the boys with great confidence about his own definition of leadership, saying that leadership is more than just a title, an achievement or a badge; leadership is about unifying the people. He concluded saying, ‘Above all, be approachable and kind, and in so doing you will set an example for the rest of the School to follow.’

Mr Cassie came forward to challenge both Austin and Benjamin with the Prefect Pledge: ‘Gentlemen, do you promise to uphold the values and standards of Saint Kentigern School and to serve its students, teachers and parents to the best of your ability and for the glory of God?’ The boys signed the Prefect Ledger, first started in 1995, then introduced the rest of their prefect team to the School, as they in turn accepted the duties of leadership, committing to serving Saint Kentigern with pride.

AUSTIN MCKEGG
Austin started at the Boys’ School as a Year 1 student in 2010. At the end of his first year, he received the class prize for General Excellence showing that right from the outset, Austin set high standards. At the completion of his Junior School years, Austin received the Year 3 class prize for Excellence and the Junior Citizenship Cup. His teacher at the time said, ‘His well-developed self-management skills are indicative of his maturity and outstanding academic ability. He thoroughly enjoys presenting speeches.’  Throughout Middle School, Austin continued to succeed. He received the Year 6 class prize for Excellence and was placed first in Art. He was a member of the Middle School A Tennis Team, the Year 5/6 A Rugby Team and the Remuera Zone Swim team.  Moving onto the Senior School, Austin’s academic results were outstanding, with this being a true testament to his discipline and desire to succeed. He made the most of every opportunity, whilst displaying the core values of our School. We look forward to his leadership during 2018.
