Congratulations to Year 7 student, Jack Dufaur who is the new National Surf Lifesaving Champion for his age group.
It’s never too young to learn safety in the water, especially on New Zealand’s surf beaches. Jack has been a member of the Whangamata Surf Club since he was five years old, learning safety and developing confidence in life saving techniques in and around the water.
Jack recently competed in the OCEANS National Championships in Mt Maunganui. From a field of 100 U12 boys, Jack progressed through to the finals of the board riding. The race required competitors to paddle around three markers and return to the beach, pick up the board and sprint to the finish line. This is the second time Jack has competed at the National Championships and he is justifiably proud of his win.
Bronson retains his Champion status
Last week at the OCEANS national surf lifesaving championships, Bronson Gleye, Year 7, won the gold medal for the second year running in the beach relay event.
This event is a 100 metre sand sprint in teams of four, two girls and two boys.
Bronson also represented his Red Beach club with distinction in other events including a fourth place in beach flags and a top 10 finish in individual sprints, surf swim, run swim run, the diamond event and the Cameron relay event. Well done Bronson, a highly successful week.
