It’s been an amazing week of success for Year 12 cyclist, Maddie Parks at the Junior Track Cycling World Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan. Not only has Maddie won a Gold medal as part of the New Zealand women’s team pursuit, in a new World Record time, but she has now gone on to also claim a Junior World Bronze medal in the in the women's 2000m individual pursuit at the velodrome!
Maddie had already shown that she has huge promise as a rider. She is the current New Zealand national junior record holder, who broke Sarah Ulmer's long-standing mark earlier this year.
In the individual event in Kazakhsan, she qualified third fastest in 2:26.627 to earn a bronze medal ride-off against Ireland's Josie Knight. Maddie had to dig deep in a very close encounter, leading by just 6/100ths of a second at the 1km mark, edging half a second clear before the Irish rider fought back. Maddie prevailed in 2:27.710 sec, which was just 15.100ths of a second ahead of her opponent – enough to ride over the line to claim third fastest junior cyclist in the world! Wow!
New Zealand team coach, Ross Machejefski said this was particularly exciting considering Maddie is a first year junior and eligible to compete as a junior again next year.
Well done Maddie, we’re all very proud of you!
