Congratulations to Year 12 student, Andrew Chen who has received a Bronze medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) while representing New Zealand in Brazil. The Olympiad gathers the best secondary school mathematicians from around the world to compete in a series of incredibly challenging mathematical problems from almost any field of mathematics. 

Andrew, along with five other students selected to represent New Zealand, were up against 100 different countries from five different continents. On each day of the IMO they received three complex mathematical questions with four and a half hours to answer them. 

Andrew said, ‘Participating in the International Mathematics Olympiad has been a truly amazing experience. It has allowed me to meet like-minded students from all over the world and shown me the elegance of mathematics.’ 

To be selected to represent New Zealand at the IMO, Andrew spent the last 10 months competing for a place in the team. From the first round the top 26 students became 12 after attending a summer resident camp in January. These students competed in three Maths Olympiad competitions, from which the team of six New Zealand representative mathematicians was selected.
