In recognition of our students who strive to achieve at the highest academic levels, Saint Kentigern College awards Academic Colours and Honours. At a special assembly held in their honour today, students who had achieved at the highest level were recognised for their achievement in last year’s external examinations.
The standard set to gain Academic Awards is high and intended to motivate our top academic students to achieve at the highest levels of excellence. The students who are awarded Colours receive a special breast pocket to wear with pride on their blazer and were proud to receive these at today’s assembly with their parents present.
New Principal of the College, Mr Russell Brooke addressed the students and their parents saying, ‘Academic achievement in today’s world is not about regurgitating facts. Examiners are skilled in creating papers which challenge students to take their knowledge and apply it. Some might say they ‘synthesise’ their knowledge and are able to use that learning for a new application. It is through this synthesis that we, as humans, can cause creativity.
‘We know that Artificial Intelligence will learn facts better than us, will remember facts better than us, will be able to access vast amounts of information in split seconds and apply priority algorithms to that information. But to be truly creative remains a human domain.
‘Why is this important to you? Because it allows you to contribute. To be part of shaping our world and worlds to come.
‘What will you contribute?
That is the exciting aspect isn’t it. To look forward and wonder where your journey will take you. Each and everyone one of us has a duty to pursue learning to the best of our ability. It is simply a matter of attitude and application.’
This morning, the top achieving students in last year’s NCEA Level 1 (Year 12 this year), NCEA Level 2 (Year 13 this year), the IB Diploma, Cambridge and those students who gained NZQA Scholarships as a Year 11 or 12 last year, were all recognised, before joining their parents for a shared morning tea.
