Since the College started offering IB in 2008, we have achieved outstanding results with a growing cohort. The College is pleased to report a record number of candidates taking exams in 2022 and enrolment in 2023.
An IB student, our 2022 Head Girl Xing Xing Lawrence reflects and shares her learning journey at the College. IB at Saint Kentigern College has enabled Xing Xing to fully immerse in a well-rounded education, balancing academic work with a range of cocurricular activities, all the while serving and leading with distinction.
The IB Diploma Programme was established in 1968 as a future-ready programme that builds and nurtures an inquiring mindset, fosters students desire to learn and prepares them to excel in their chosen career and to lead meaningful lives.
The programme is aimed at independent learners, particularly those who are intending to attend university overseas. Our IB students are motivated, and willing learners who are prepared to look at issues from different perspectives.
How does the IB Diploma Programme work?
An IB student undertakes six subjects, usually one selected from each subject group. Three subjects are studied in greater depth at Higher Level and three subjects at Standard Level. One of the subjects must be a second language.
In addition, the programme has three compulsory core requirements that are intended to broaden the educational experience and to challenge students to apply their knowledge and understanding. Students are required to complete a formal Extended Essay (EE), a course in Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and participate in Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) across the two years.
What does the Higher Level and Standard Level mean?
Each of the three Higher Level courses represent 240 teaching hours. Standard Level courses represent 150 teaching hours.
How are students assessed?
IB subjects are assessed by a combination of internal assessment coursework and external examinations at the end of the two-year programme.
How much does it cost?
In addition to tuition fees, IB fees are $1000 per year, paid in 10 monthly instalments for students taking IB in Years 12 and 13.
