Roll of unique numbers

From the College Archives:

Did you know that every student who has attended Saint Kentigern College has a unique number?

Beginning in 1953, when the College opened the doors of its three room, wooden classroom block in the farming area of Pakuranga to 90 boys, every new student upon enrolment has been allocated a special number, recorded in the consecutively numbered official Roll Book.

There are now three volumes of the Roll Book containing the numbers from number 1 (Warren Boyes) to the new entrants of 2014 whose numbers currently go up to 14631, the official total of students who have attended the College over 60 years.

Each new student signs the roll book alongside their names which are hand-written in full. The Roll Books are housed in the College Archive centre and many of the current boys and girls are interested to see the name and signature of a father or grandfather who attended the College in past years.

In the early days of the College the numbers were used for many different purposes, including clothing labels, and some of the early clothing items held in the archives today have numbered labels. Many Old Collegians remember their ‘school numbers’ and use them during the roll-call at reunions.

The photograph attached shows No 2 (John Corban) and No 1 (Warren Boyes) at the College 60th Jubilee in 2013.

The College Archive Centre is open to students at lunchtimes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Other enquiries to: collegearchives@saintkentigern.com
