Dance

Who is dance for? Anyone who is interested in developing their creativity, enjoys being able to express themselves and enjoys taking risks and having fun while learning important skills.

Our dance students are fortunate to have two purpose built dedicated dance studios in which to work and rehearse. A wide variety of dance styles are all catered for and the shows and productions are a joy to watch.

Secondary school dance offers students opportunities to develop creativity, self-expression, confidence, choreography skills, performing skills, research, and dance analysis.

The Dance Academy and Troupes:

The Dance Academy Programme caters for different levels and styles of dance, including ballet, contemporary, jazz, and hip-hop. Within the dance academy programme, we have student led dance troupes which senior students can apply to lead. These troupes’ students audition for and rehearse before or after school and perform in our annual Dance Showcase. We also have a variety of dance classes taught by guest teachers before and after school which students can apply for.

Curriculum

As a subject, Dance is one of the four separate Arts disciplines — Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts — that make up the ‘essential learning’ area of The Arts in the New Zealand Curriculum.  It is a curriculum requirement that all students in Year 7 take courses covering each of the disciplines meaning that both boys and girls at this age have a ‘taste’ of Dance as a future area of study.

Our Middle School dancers have opportunities to perform in the Middle School Musical and the Wearable Arts Show, with some advanced students also taking part in the annual Dance Showcase.

As part of the assessment for their Senior School course work, there is both a performance and a choreographic element at all three levels of NCEA. Our Dance students meet these objectives with the work they undertake preparing for the College Dance Showcase that brings 150 dancers to the stage in a selection of original choreographies prepared and presented by the students for their NCEA assessment. In addition, some of our drama (NCEA) and theatre arts (IB Diploma) students are involved with the technical and production aspects of the show. Our senior dance students also have opportunities to choreograph for our Middle School students.

NCEA Dance is a University entrance approved subject that will allow senior students entry into university courses. There are also several Tertiary institutes in New Zealand that offer qualifications in Dance, offering certificates, diplomas, and degrees.
