The Solo Music Competition returned this year to the Music Centre on 22 October, offering a platform for our finest musicians to showcase their talents. With the Middle School competition taking place during the day, the evening concert was focused on our senior school finalist, all of which gave outstanding performances.
Adjudicators Gemma Lee (pianist) and Rachel Alexander Sutherland (vocalist) watched each instrumentalist carefully, lending their expertise to evaluate the exceptional talent on display. The competition featured Senior School finalists from five categories: Brass, Woodwind, Strings, Vocal, and Piano. Next year, a new Ethnic Instruments category will expand this already diverse competition.
The finalists poured their passion into each performance. Senior School standout Amy Chen earned the Overall Winner title and the String Cup for her breathtaking rendition of Violin Concerto in G Minor, 1st movement by Max Bruch, joining the legacy of accomplished past winners. Meanwhile, Middle School star Maodong Li secured the Overall Winner Middle School award as well as the String Cup, impressing judges with both technique and artistry.
The additional Senior School category winners were Seamus Wong (Brass Cup), Wilmer Zhang (Woodwind Cup), Xarya Knox (Vocal Cup), and Isaac Chang (Piano Cup). Highly Commended awards went to Matthew Stubbs on violin and pianist Edison Zhou.
Another standout was Middle School student William Xu, who earned both the Middle School Brass Cup and Highly Commended for his cello performance. The rest of the Middle School awards went to Rachel Zhou (Highly Commended), Ryan Cen (Woodwind Cup), Ethan Huang (Percussion Cup), Trista Wang (Vocal Cup), and Annie Ye (Piano Cup).
The competition highlighted both individual talent and reflected the dedication and mentorship within our music programme. As the curtain closed on the evening, it was clear that there is a continual stream of next generation musicians that will continue to lead our larger ensembles forward in the years to come. We are in good hands.
