Running For Foodbank

June 29, 2020 at 10:47 AM

In keeping with our Vision that our graduates will ‘Serve and Lead with Distinction,’ our Saint Kentigern schools encourage students of all ages to find ways to be of service to others. Service learning allows our students to discover ‘their best selves’ and develop lifelong habits of caring for others.

Across the campuses, our students in Years 7 and 8 are encouraged to work towards the Saint Kentigern Service Awards, beginning with the bronze award in Year 7, and subsequently working towards their silver and gold awards. In order to receive their badges, students need to achieve goals they set for themselves, participate in the 40 Hour Famine, complete a service-related research task, represent their school in Cultural, Sport or Academic activities,  and complete set hours of service at school, along with carrying out acts of service at home and in the community.

College Year 8 students, Leo Fendall and Sam Armstrong are both working towards their silver Saint Kentigern Award and elected to take to the streets yesterday, to run to run 21 km – a half marathon – to raise money and food for the Glen Innes Foodbank. Opening a Give-a-Little page, the boys have already collected over $700 and amassed a quantity of non-perishable food that they will deliver to the Foodbank during the holidays.

The boys said, ‘On the day, we broke the run down into three runs with a short break in between - 8km, 3km, and finally 10km. It was great to have some friends running with us and we finished much earlier than expected. We are thrilled with the support we have received and we are pleased that the Glen Innes Foodbank will be well stocked as a result!’

The boys explained that a $5 donation will purchase a soup pack of three cans, a $10 donation will purchase either a ‘Clean pack’ including toothpaste, toilet paper, toothbrush and soap, or a ‘can pack’ of soup, beans, tuna, spaghetti and peas. A $15 donation will purchase a ‘Carb pack’ of pasta, rice, oats, noodles, cereal and crackers, and a $20 donation will purchase a ‘Combo pack’ of oats, pasta, pasta sauce, tuna, soup, canned vegetables and toilet paper.
