Our hearts full

September 03, 2022 at 10:57 PM

It was an early start for around 400 fathers and their sons on each of the two mornings this week as our Boys’ School students gathered to celebrate their dads in conjunction with Fathers’ Day.

A sell-out crowd, this year’s Father & Son Breakfast was held at the Ellerslie Event Center. It was heartening to see our boys’ and their dads having conversations as they walked towards the hall and sharing precious time together as they feasted on a sumptuous spread to start the day.

Each year, we welcome a speaker to our breakfast gathering to inspire us with their story and this year’s guests was nothing short of inspiring. Widely known as the world number one blade runner, Liam Malone hit the headlines when after less than three short years in sports, he broke the previous Paralympic records held by Oscar Pistorius. His story of hitting rock bottom while at university to turning it all around and receiving two golds and a silver medal at the track made him New Zealand’s second fastest 400m sprinter ever – legs or not!

Liam has been awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Athletics, Disabled Sportsperson of the Year at the 54th Halberg Awards and winner of the Sovereign Insurance ‘Make a Difference’ start up competition.

Liam shared his life’s journey, challenges faced and finished by encouraging the boys to discover their passion, set goals, make plans and work tirelessly to achieve them.

Our thanks to Liam for sharing his experience and words of wisdom with us. We would also like to convey our appreciation to Lynda Millward and her amazing Parents and Friends team for all the planning, coordination and hardwork in getting each of the mornings underway.

Our appreciation also goes to our generous sponsors Matassa Property Services, Winger Motors, nib, Structured Builders, +MORE Accounting & Advisory, Bracewell Limited, Cubeekiz, Bal Matheson of Richmond Chambers, Dreamhome Construction and our anonymous donors.

And most importantly, to each and every dad who joined us for this special occasion. Happy Father’s Day!
