In the recent July holidays, nineteen of our Year 11 to 13 students, accompanied by staff members Katie Gordon and Yuki Seko, started an incredible eighteen-day trip of Spain.
They hit the ground running with three days in Barcelona, where there were able to take in all the incredible Gaudi masterpieces around the city, including the Sagrada Familia, Casa Batlló and Park Güell. We took time exploring the Rambla and taking in all the yummy delights of the La Boqueria and then exploring the Gothic Quarter on our last day in Barcelona.
We then hopped on a coach to the beautiful and vibrant Valencia, were we explored the beautiful city. On our second day we made a necessary beach stop in the heat and a trip to try some authentic Paella followed by Horchata and churro tastings!
From here we entered the trip favourite, the coastal village of Nerja! There, students enjoyed a weeklong experience of living with a Spanish family. During the day they would head to the local language school and do some activities and then spend time living in an authentic Spanish home environment. This was a time for students to slow down and really embrace both the language and culture. The students got to show some talent with Salsa and cooking classes at the school. They were also lucky enough to explore the white village of Frigilana and spend a day exploring Malaga and marvelling at the works of Picasso. A new addition to the trip was also a day trip to El Camainto del Rey where we had to conquer our fear of heights. The students were all sad to say goodbye to the village that had been their Spanish home for a week.
From here we travelled to Granada and braved the heat to explore the breathtaking Alhambra. The last day in Granada was spent exploring and combining Science and Spanish at the Bio Dome Museum.
Onto the final league of our trip, Madrid. We spent our time here exploring the sites of the capital and taking in all the incredible art at the Prado. For our football lovers we saved the best for last with a tour the Bernabeu Stadium, with many excited to hit the football clubs’ merchandise store.
This trip really utilised every moment and the students didn’t let any opportunities pass them by. They really made every effort to explore both the culture, history and language of Spain. An amazing and unforgettable experience.
