Last April holiday, thirty of our Year 11 to 13 students, accompanied by staff members Duncan McQueen, Tina Yan, and Laura Deng, embarked on an unforgettable journey to China. This incredible opportunity was generously funded by the Centre for Language Education and Cooperation in China and organised in cooperation with Tui Tuia Learning Circle and Xi'an International Studies University (XISU).
Our adventure began with two days in Beijing, where we marvelled at the grandeur of the Great Wall and explored the historic Forbidden City. The real heart of our trip, however, was the time spent on the XISU campus. XISU welcomed us with a diverse and engaging program, offering not only Chinese language lessons but also a variety of cultural activities. Students tried their hands at Tai Chi, Chinese calligraphy, and traditional paper crafts.
Highlights of the cultural immersion included visits to the Terra Cotta Warriors and the beautiful Tang Paradise, as well as a delightful Ai Ju noodle-making workshop. These activities provided a perfect blend of learning and fun, allowing students to practice their language skills and immerse themselves in Chinese culture.
The program struck a perfect balance between academic learning and sightseeing. Beyond the classroom, students had ample opportunities to explore, shop, and use their newfound language skills in real-life settings. This trip was a truly enriching experience that broadened our horizons and deepened our appreciation for Chinese culture and history.
