Dance Workshop With NZSD

June 18, 2018 at 11:35 AM

In the build-up to this week’s Dance Showcase, the College was fortunate to secure a visit last week from the Head of the Contemporary Dance Programme at the New Zealand School of Dance (NZSD), Paula Steeds-Huston. In addition, two NZSD graduate students, Toa Paranihi and Conner Masseurs and three current third year students, Braedyn Humphries and Laifa James Ta’ala, and Old Collegian, Christopher Clegg attended.

The five dancers had just finished performing at the Pacific Dance Festival in Mangere and took the time to visit the College, firstly to perform an extract from one of their dance works and also to facilitate a dance workshop for some of the 1st XV Rugby boys who will be performing in the Showcase this week.

The 1st XV boys all took part in an ‘M and B’ – Muscle and Bone – class and learnt a dance sequence which they performed to each other. The boys all had a great time and after seeing the NZSD students’ performance, they performed the item they have prepared for the Showcase.

Following this, the visitors took a contemporary dance workshop for our Year 10 to Year 13 dance students and then performed another dance work that they had performed at the Festival.

It was an amazing opportunity for our College dance students to work alongside and watch dancers of such a high calibre; there was much to learn! We also enjoyed seeing former College dance student, Christopher Clegg to appreciate how far he has come as a dancer.

We would like to sincerely thank Paula and the NZSD dancers for the time they spent with our students. They were all truly inspirational!
