College Premier Theatresports Team Win First Round

June 09, 2014 at 2:45 PM

The Saint Kentigern Premier Theatresports team showed that they will be the team to beat in the 2014 Theatresports Youth Programme (TYP) Auckland Championship after winning last week’s competition round.

Competing against 2013 Auckland Champions, Kelston Boys High and teams from St Cuthbert’s and Auckland Grammar, our premier team of Tate Steele, Mitchell Fissenden, Helen Jarrett and Sam Elliott were simply outstanding.

The highlight of the night was the Saint Kentigern team performing a musical version of the Battle Of Hastings, involving Tate Steele as time travelling Albert Einstein and Sam Elliott with a projectile croissant as the key factors in the outcome of the battle. Mitchell Fissenden was hilarious as a spitting handsome prince/cowboy in a Western movie interpretation of Sleeping Beauty, while Helen Jarrett kept the boys in line with her succinct, wicked witch character and her articulate use of gestures in the ‘Arms’ game.

‘They are every bit as good as Saint Kents, ‘The Ice Men’ of 2009’, commented Kelston coach, Brad Mihaljevich. This was the last Saint Kentigern team to win the prestigious TYP trophy. Saint Kentigern is the only school to have made every Grand Final in the last seven years and were runners up in 2010, 2011 and 2013. The Grand Final involves the four top teams out of the 22 schools in Auckland who compete in the competition. Kelston has made the Grand Final in all but two of those years.

The night was well attended by parents and students and raised another $220.00 for the Saint Kentigern College World Vision Malawi School project. The goal being to raise enough money to build a toilet for a school in Malawi that will encourage many more girls to attend school and get an education. Saint Kentigern will now play Kelston and others at Kelston on June 19th in another important round.

Meanwhile, another highlight on the Theatresports calendar will be the upcoming Old Collegians versus current Premier players at the ‘U Night For Malawi’ in the Sports Centre Lounge, Friday July 25th at 7.00pm. This night will see the current crop of senior Theatresports players pit their wits against Saint Kentigern graduate Theatresports players from the last ten years in another fundraising event for the World Vision Malawi project.
