College Athletes Sweeps Secondary Triathlon Championship

April 20, 2023 at 3:02 PM

Our College Triathlon Team put on a remarkable display of athleticism at the 2023 New Zealand Secondary Triathlon Championships held in Wanaka on 29-30 March, with Saint Kentigern College claiming the top spot in the overall school standing.

With each athlete giving their all in their respective races, they managed to secure outstanding results. Their exceptional performance across various races and categories saw them emerged as one of the strongest contenders of the competition.

The competition started with Triathlon races on Day 1 and our athletes took advantage of the favourable weather conditions of no wind and blue skies, although it was a little chilly. Our Under 13 athletes, Oliver McGuinness and Sophie Archer, got off to a strong start, opening Day 1 with an impressive performance. Oliver took the U13 title by 47 seconds while Sophie placed second. In the U14 Female race, Ava Van Rij placed fifth.

In the U16 Woman, Dorothy Anderson delivered a strong overall performance finishing second. In the U16 Male event which attracted the largest contingent of athletes of 35 at the starting line, Isaac Morris started the race well with a superb bike leg but finished sixth place 1:01 behind the winner and only 16 secs from the third position.

In the U19 Male race which took place after midday, Coen Anderson dominated from start to finish and recorded the fastest swim, bike and run, emerging the clear winner of the race. Fellow athletes Joshua Gordon-Glassford and Daniel Hayes finished fourth and fifth respectively in the race.

In the U19 Female race, Olivia Rooney was in full form delivering an exceptional bike and run combo to claim the National Championship, with teammate Isabel Bannister rounding out the podium with a fantastic third placing.
