Exclusive Dance School Beckons

The College is thrilled to announce that Year 13 student Christopher Clegg has been accepted into the prestigious New Zealand School of Dance in Wellington from next year! Christopher has been studying under the College Head of Dance, Mr Geordan Wilcox, for two years, and showed a strong desire to pursue dance as a career. As a Year 12 student last year, Christopher performed in ‘Te Manu Ahi – The Firebird’, a production featuring students from Unitec in conjunction with the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra and Atimira Dance Company. ‘That experience ignited his passion and interest in dance,’ says Mr Wilcox. Since then, Christopher has pushed himself with further opportunities both at the College and at tertiary institutions. He sent a video to Paula Steeds-Huston, the head of contemporary at NZSD and was subsequently invited to participate in Tu Move, a hip hop focused workshop for boys. He thoroughly enjoyed the environment and from his performance was accepted into the school for 2016 onwards.

Mr Wilcox is a graduate of NZSD and is intimately aware of the standard of Christopher’s achievement in being accepted to attend. ‘Only around 30 people are given a place each year,’ he says. ‘People apply from New Zealand, Australia and beyond. It is an amazing dance institution with a very high employment success rate and strong international links.’ Mr Wilcox says Christopher’s ‘natural ability, timing, and rhythm’ combined with the skills learnt at Saint Kentigern will see him succeed in the notoriously tough NZSD programme.

Congratulations Chris and we look forward to seeing how your dance ambition progresses!
