Our girls have a great range of sports to choose from.
The School has a heated outdoor swimming pool in a leafy setting central to the campus. Heating the pool ensures that we can maximise the summer swimming season to ensure all our girls develop crucial swimming and water safety skills from an early age.
Sporting Codes
In the Girls' School there is an opportunity to participate in the following sports
Athletics
Held in Term 4, the school athletics day involves all girls from Year 0-8 who participate at their level. The events have a House focus where all girls win points for their House. Top athletes compete at zone athletic meets.
Ball Skills
Ball Skills is offered to our Year 0-2 students. It is run by Susan Rope from Life’s a Ball throughout the year. The session takes place after school in the school hall and works to develop a variety of fundamental skills for preparing young students for sport in the coming years. Susan works closely with what is happening in physical education and the topics covered each term.
Cricket
Cricket runs in Term 1 for Year 5-8s during the Tuesday and Wednesday sports afternoons. Girls are involved with school exchanges and work towards their respective zone days. We also have teams that play in a Saturday competition and this is offered to all Year 3-8 students. To develop interest in cricket in Year 3-6 we also have coaches who come in to work with all students at the end of Term 3 to prepare them to take part in a Quikhit Tournament early in Term 4.
Cross Country
Year 4 to 6 cross country is held at Saint Kentigern College. Year 0 to 3 is held on the grounds of the Boys' School. All students in the School are expected to compete in these events. This has a House focus and we run both the days along with the Boys’ School. The top runners in Year 5-8 compete in the cross country zones. Year 7/8 also participate in the College cross country sports day.
Flippa Ball
Flippa Ball is a mini version of water polo. Girls in Years 3-6 play flippa ball in a competition at the Sacred Heart Aquatics Centre. There is a practice session once a week in the evenings. The competition is run on a Sunday evening.
Football
Football is offered to Year 5-8 students. Football is run through the Tuesday and Wednesday sports afternoons. They play against various local schools every second week and enter their respective zone days. Football runs during Term 2 and 3 only.
Gymnastics – Artistic and Rhythmic
Artistic gymnastics takes place during Term 2 and 3. All students involved attend one training per week with Tri Star Gymnastics coaches in preparation for the Zone days in Term 3. This is offered to Year 3-8 students. At the end of Term 3, we offer rhythmic Gymnastics coaching where students learn a routine using either rope, ribbon, clubs, ball or hoop. They then take part in the Auckland Rhythmic Competition at the end of Term 4. This is offered to Year 0-8 students.
Gym Club
Gym Club is offered to our Year 0-4 students to develop their locomotion, balance, rotation and spring, flight and landing skills which provides a good foundation for body awareness, control and coordination. Gym Club works on a badge system which participants work towards achieving. This is offered after school in the school hall throughout the year.
House Relays
These two afternoon events are held in Term 1 (Swimming House Relays) and Term 4 (Running House Relays). All students are involved either participating in the relay or supporting their house. These are fun events that bring both the boys’ and girls’ schools together to show their house spirit.
Hockey
Hockey is offered to Year 5-8 students. Hockey is run through the Tuesday and Wednesday sports afternoons. They play against various local schools every second week and enter into the respective zone days. Hockey runs during Term 2 and 3 only. We also offer development squads in Term 1 for students to have the opportunity to brush up on their skills prior to trials.
Netball
Netball is offered to Year 5-8 students. Netball is run through the Tuesday and Wednesday sports afternoons. They play against various local schools every second week and enter into the respective zone days. Netball runs during Term 2 and 3 only. For our Year 7/8 students who play netball at the College, these teams are also involved in the Tuesday afternoon netball competition held at Morrin Rd and also are required to attend an additional morning training at the College. (Transport back to the Girls' School after training is organised through school). We also offer development squads in Term 1 for students to have the opportunity to brush up on their skills prior to trials.
Swimming
Swimming is taught during class lessons during an eight to ten week season in Term 1 and weather dependent in Term 4. During the swimming season all girls are expected to compete in the school swimming competitions. Two separate events are held with heat races and a finals day which allow for all students to be involved. The top swimmers from the championship events then go on to compete at the zone swimming sports. Our Year 7/8 girls are expected to participate in the College swimming sports early in Term 1.
Tennis
Tennis runs in Term 1 for Year 5-8s during the Tuesday and Wednesday sports afternoons. Girls are involved with school exchanges and work towards their respective zone days. The school also offers tennis coaching for Year 0-8 in Term 1 and 4.
Touch Rugby
Touch rugby runs in Term 1 for Year 5-8s during the Tuesday and Wednesday sports afternoons. Girls are involved with school exchanges and work towards their respective zone days
Water Polo
Water polo is offered to all Year 7/8 girls and is played on Friday evenings, in a local competition. There is also a practice session once a week in the morning at Sacred Heart Aquatic Centre. The school also enters into a number of water polo tournaments throughout the year.
