OVERVIEW

In a world where new ideas, innovation and the ability to think creatively is highly prized, Saint Kentigern College recognises the importance of developing creativity. Understanding that the Arts can provide opportunities for emotional and intellectual growth, our students are encouraged to participate in a well rounded, yet challenging Arts programme, which offers unique opportunities to develop imaginative and innovative thought.

Campus development at the College in recent years has seen the opening of the Jack Paine Centre, providing purpose built facilities for the creation and display of the Visual Arts. Redevelopment of the former gymnasium has provided a modern music teaching facility with areas for both individual and group practice, and a performance auditorium. Recent work under Elliot Hall transformed the space into studios to provide teaching facilities for drama as a curriculum subject, as well as a rehearsal venue for performance. A sprung floor and mirror lined studio in the Sports Centre provides the venue for Dance, a curriculum subject that is growing in popularity for both boys and girls. These developments are testament to our commitment to see the Arts programme grow in strength at the College.

The Arts stimulate imagination, thinking and understanding. They challenge our perceptions, uplift and entertain us, and enrich our emotional and spiritual lives. When taught as part of the curriculum, students are encouraged to look beyond the superficial and dig deeper to question their immediate perceptions.

Students who study the Arts at a senior level are well placed to go on to contribute their vision, abilities and creative energies not only to arts initiatives but also to industry, as companies seek creative solutions to ensure their place in a competitive world.

If there is one thing we can be sure of, students leaving school today need to be prepared to adapt and change during their working lives. Creative thinking and reasoning may well be the tool that gives them the edge in a future thinking world. There is no question that at Saint Kentigern, the Arts are here to stay!

DRACULA
An adaptation by Ian Thomas of Bram Stoker’s classic Victorian novel, Dracula (1897), this year’s senior Drama Production was well pitched for dramatic interpretation on the College stage, with just a touch of tongue in cheek humour from an otherwise serious cast
